Members invited to apply for Effective Manager Programme 2021

SELECT is inviting the next intake of students to join the Effective Manager Programme, which is run in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.

Now in its 13th year, the programme is designed to help Members in a management or a supervisory position improve their knowledge and understanding of being a good manager, with no formal university qualifications required.

The programme – which will start in January 2021 – consists of nine workshops run over a year, each on a different aspect of management. Areas covered include:

  • Skills of good management
  • Improving communication
  • Building great teams
  • An introduction to coaching
  • Managing change
  • Recruitment
  • Motivating staff.

Students are encouraged to take this knowledge back to work, try out new techniques and write about how it works in practice as a manager.

Programme Leader Diane Peebles said: “The course is really practical in nature, and this surprises some students, who maybe think a university course will be all about theory and academic learning.

“The lecturers encourage students to share experiences and ideas, and the formal assignments inspire students to try out some of the things they have learned on their course back at work.”

Students don’t need to work for a big company or have a big team – those taking part range from managers who already run their own businesses to people working in small and medium-sized organisations.

One previous student, Jamie, said: “I didn’t think it would be so practical and so relevant for me. I was able to take ideas straight back and use them, which was great, and it definitely improved my management skills as a result”.

This year’s programme saw the final three workshops delivered online due to COVID-19, and with the ongoing uncertainty around the return to college, the next intake has been delayed until January.

Diane added: “It’s often said that ‘out of adversity comes opportunity’ and we succeeded in finishing this year’s programme with most students completing their qualification.

“Over the past months we’ve all had to adapt, be flexible and pick up new skills and confidence, so in a way it’s been a good test of management skills.

“We’re now encouraging another year of students to join the programme and test their management skills in the same way”.
