New virtual classroom launched for online training

SELECT has set up a new virtual training classroom to allow Members to take part in an online version of our SQA Requirements for Electrical Installation Course (18th Edition), also known as the 218 course.

The e-learning facility will allow delegates to complete the course in the comfort of their own home, with a virtual training session that runs from 9am to 5pm.

Throughout the day there will be four assessments which will have a mix of workbook and multiple choice questions. The questions will be displayed within the presentation and the answer sheets will be e-mailed to the delegate prior to the virtual classroom session. There will also be breakout times after each assessment to allow delegates to experience the usual classroom style course.

Training Manager Jenny Cryans said: “We are recommending that delegates have a printer to allow them to get the best experience from the session, as they will need to refer to the course notes and have the answer sheets printed.  If they don’t have a printer then it may be harder for them to navigate between the session and the course notes.”

Further information can be found on the Training section of the SELECT website, by downloading this brochure or by contacting the Training department on 0131 445 5577.

Other courses

The new course is one of four online training options launched by SELECT to help Members expand their skills and stay compliant during the current COVID-19 lockdown.

Working in-house and in partnership with recognised training providers, other topics include Scottish Building Standards, health and safety and a range of SVQ options. Discounted courses are also being offered exclusively for SELECT Members.

Training Manager Jenny Cryans said: “We know many Members are unable to attend regular training courses, so e-learning offers a good opportunity for them to continue learning and ensure their business is safe and compliant.

“Research has shown that online learning is a highly effective way to learn. It gives you what you need when you need it, wherever you are, which is more important now more of us are working from home.”

The three other routes to online training now being offered by SELECT are:

Scottish Building Standards Update Training (408)

This online update course is intended for electrical installers who are already registered as Approved Certifiers of Construction (Electrical Installations to BS 7671:2018) in the Scottish Building Standards Certification Scheme. The course meets the three-yearly update training requirement as set out in the Certification Scheme. Note: The course is only open to Registered Approved Certifiers. New entrants to the Scheme are required to complete the full day course (216).

Partnership with Training First Safety Ltd

We have also set up a partnership with Training First Safety Ltd to deliver discounted e-learning training. The full suite of online courses can be viewed by clicking here. The prices are listed beside each course, but Training First Safety Ltd have also agreed to a temporary discount. To book or find out more please contact SELECT Training on 0131 445 5577 or e-mail [email protected]. We’ll need a note of your email address to sign you up for the requested course.

SVQs in partnership with Skills Development Scotland

SELECT is also working with another external training provider, Tala Training, to offer the following fully-funded SVQs in partnership with Skills Development Scotland:

  • SVQ Level 3 – Construction Site Supervision
  • SVQ Level 3 – Occupational Works Supervision
  • SVQ Level 4 – Construction Site Management
  • SVQ Level 5 – Senior Construction Management

The SVQ is an evidence-based qualification in which the candidate gathers a portfolio of evidence of their supervisory role as well as completing question sets.

The qualification takes six months to complete, after which the candidate would usually meet an assessor to carry out their initial induction. Assessors are now doing this remotely using Zoom or Microsoft Teams to allow candidates to get started immediately.

A further three to four assessment visits would then be arranged, approximately every 10 to 13 weeks, allowing the assessor to record progress and review evidence. Once all this evidence has been verified, the candidate will be resulted for the award.
